macedon arrowheads

Socketed Cast Bronze Arrowheads
Greece/Persia
600~300 B.C.

Crete is the largest of the Greek Isles. In ancient times, men on this island were expertly trained in the bow and arrow. These Cretan archers were widely known as the best in the ancient world. Owing to their skill, they easily found employment as mercenaries in many armies, including Philip II’s and Alexander the Great’s.

In 326 BC, Alexander the Great had conquered much of the civilized world. By the age of 30, he controlled nearly everything from Greece to Northwestern India, including Egypt, Pakistan, and Iran. This Macedonian king was undefeated in battle, and is considered the greatest military genius in all of ancient history. His use of hired Cretan archers and their bronze-tipped arrows were instrumental in defeating the enemy in several battles, such as at Hydaspes.

This bronze arrowhead style was utilized by the Cretans between 600 BC and 300 BC. Though they cannot be directly traced to a specific battle or ruler, it is highly probable they littered the battlefields under Philip or Alexander.

These two exceptional specimens were acquired by the museum from Paleo Direct Inc of Altamonte Springs, Florida.
